Laurie Discusses Role Modeling and Diversity
During the Olympics, the news media did not make much of an issue concerning the ethnic backgrounds of America’s great gymnasts. However, having done outstanding performances at the Olympics, Laurie Hernandez has had the opportunity to point out that she sees herself as a role model for those who have an Hispanic ethnic heritage.
Listen as she explains this in this video from Sports Illustrated.
Laurie points out that the 2016 Olympics women’s USA gymnastics team had a diverse mix of ethnic groups. Together the team is a role model for many, not just because of their sports accomplishments, but because they showed the world their unity and good friendships in spite of ethnic differences.
Spectators weren’t watching them and thinking much about their ethnicity, but instead were admiring all that they have accomplished and how well they represented the USA.
