Marta Karolyi – Her name brings a lot of feelings to the surface when you are a gymnast who wants to make the USA team for international competition. There is respect, mixed with a certain amount of fear. For Marta has the influence to say whether you go or stay home.
Her knowledge of women’s gymnastics and what it takes to win is greater than that of most others. And those who train under her watchful eye will develop and learn a lot if they take her instructions to heart and work their bodies until they master the tasks she sets before them.
At every major competition she keeps her eyes on the strongest contestants, constantly making judgements about who should be invited for advanced training at the Ranch.
And you can be sure she’s also keeping an eye on the younger gymnasts to see who has potential for future Olympics. In spite of being in her mid-70s, she is the highly respected and powerful National Coordinator for USA women’s gymnastics. She has stated that she will retire after the 2016 Olympics.
