No one would have imagined that gymnastic hero Nastia Liukin, the gold medalist at the 2008 Olympics would take a nasty fall during her uneven bar routine at the 2012 Olympic Trials.  It was heart breaking to see such an outstanding gymnast lose her chance of returning to the Olympics.

In spite of the fall and her disappointment, the crowd cheered loudly for her and gave her a standing ovation  – a way of saying farewell to her as a competitor.  She rose to the occasion and smiled and waved back.

In a follow-up interview, she was very gracious and supportive of the USA team.
